Parrot Mouth (Prognathism)

Parrot mouth or Prognathism also known as brachygnathism, overshot maxilla, buck tooth, undershot jaw or overbite is a common problem.

Here we have a young horse with severe parrot mouth  being 2.5 inches overshot. With the correct dental checkups this should have been spotted when he was a foal.

It is thought that horses with a degree of Parrot Mouth have difficulty grasping food because of their misaligned incisors.

Failure to treat these defects could lead to inefficient grazing loss of condition, growth retardation and excessive hooks becoming sharp and causing pain.

Fortunately this horse has had the good fortune to fall in to the hands of an owner who has persevered with him to give him a good quality of life.

We had to have a custom made speculum in order to routinely maintain his teeth and will continue with his orthodontic correction along with his regular dental care.

Words cannot accurately describe just how fantastic Glenn is. My horse has one of the most severe cases of parrot mouth that experts have seen across the entire UK (I have been told it's so severe he should have been euthanised as a foal. Glenn has worked with me tirelessly for over a year to re-engineer standard dental equipment to comfortably fit his mouth so that his teeth can be regularly looked after. Glenn has contacted people across the world for opinions and views on my horse's issues in order to try to find a way to properly care for his mouth. Incredibly, very few people were interested in helping or if they were, they didn't have any idea how to help. Glenn didn't give up and in the end, he actually ended up working with my Dad to design something between the two of them to look after my horse. My horse now has a happy and healthy future ahead of him. Glenn has gone above and beyond what any other professional has done. He is extremely knowledgeable but above that - he actually cares. He is calm and professional with my horses and I would never trust anyone else to look after them now. Highly recommended.
